Since before I started working here in July of 2013, our outside landscaping was being tended by some dedicated volunteers, Jim Legler, a “proud and happy member of the Galt Kiwanis Club”, and Carol Frost, a longtime member of East Sacramento Kiwanis. Jim and Carol spend two or three hours every week mowing, edging, trimming, pruning and weeding. They do whatever is necessary. As a result, the planting areas and lawns around our facility look fantastic.
As many of you know, for the past year, Jim has also been the President of the Kiwanis Family House Board of Directors. He has given countless hours of his time in that capacity. He made it his mission to visit all of the clubs in Divisions 7 and 44 to thank them personally for their support of Kiwanis Family House. He has helped our board to establish policies and procedures, board governance standards and a new strategic plan. He works quietly behind the scenes, always thinking about how to improve Kiwanis Family House and help us to better fulfill our mission.
Jim has been a true friend to KFH, both as a volunteer and as a leader. He has dug into his own pocket on several occasions to pay for needed equipment or repairs. His dedication to our facility and our mission is truly inspiring.
Recently, Jim told me that it was time for him to step back and let someone else take over the landscape maintenance duties. Carol will continue to mow lawns and prune roses, etc. but she needs a new landscape maintenance partner. Jim will be stepping down at the end of May.
Please join me in thanking Jim for his dedicated service to Kiwanis Family House. If you happen to see him, take the time to say thank you. When he leaves, he will leave behind a legacy of fewer weeds, better equipment, greener grass and he will leave some big shoes to fill.
WANTED: Volunteer(s) to work two to three hours per week, mowing, edging, pruning, trimming, weeding and doing what is necessary to keep KFH landscape looking sharp. Contact Charlie Bussey at cbussey@kiwanisfamilyhouse.org if you are interested.
