Kiwanis Family House

Director’s Column – October 2015

Lt. Governor BannerThe families we serve while they endure serious illness and injury need Lt. Governors from all corners of the Kiwanis family!  I address my comments this month to you, LTGs!

We give continuous attention to Sponsor Clubs and their presidents.  That is logical because we have promoted our Sponsor Club Program for many years.  Club memberships have the authority to pledge the year-to-year funding that being a Sponsor Club entails.  As noted elsewhere in this addition, we have recently added our 101st Sponsor Club!

I have been asked whether Divisions can be sponsors as well.  Because Divisions do not have the organizational status of clubs with memberships authorized to commit future resources, we do not have the same opportunity.  But Lt. Governors have been otherwise supportive during their administrative years.  Some have been our ambassadors, telling our story and asking their clubs to consider becoming official Sponsor Clubs.  They have also given us spots on their Division Council Meeting agendas.  They are chances to speak directly to club leadership teams.

During the year that just ended, one Wings of Service Lt. Governor donated the proceeds of the prize drawings at each of her monthly Division Council Meetings to the Kiwanis Family House.  For the year, her Division graciously donated $1,500 above and beyond what her clubs individually donated in their capacities as Sponsor Clubs.  This concept would be easy to adopt in any Division whether or not member clubs are sponsors of the Kiwanis Family House.

Several Kiwanis Lt. Governors who assumed office this month and are members of the Governor Cherice’s Rockstars of Service team have conveyed their desire to support the KFH.    To all of you, I humbly ask that you be our emissaries, tell our story, share our video presentation, invite us to your Divisions, encourage your clubs to become KFH Sponsor Clubs, generate financial support for us at your Council Meetings, or organize a dedicated Division-wide fundraising project.  I will acknowledge and recognize you when we gather in Las Vegas next spring.

Circle K Lt. Governors and club leaders – you already support the Kiwanis Family House because your California-Nevada-Hawaii District has declared it to be district-wide fundraising initiative.  I am so grateful for this commitment.  Keep your ears open for something called the March in March.  We will begin promoting this project at your Fall Training Conference next month.  I know it will be a huge success around the District and that we will recognize you at your spring convention!

As for Key Club, I have only had the opportunity to get to know a few local Lt. Governors.  You and your clubs are often at the Kiwanis Family House doing community service or are raising support for us through your Awake-a-Thons and collection drives.  Please know that we value you.  Your efforts directly benefit our guest families.  I’d like to think that partnerships with other Key Club leaders await us.  My eyes and ears are always open.

Did I mention that the families we serve need focused support from Lt. Governors throughout the Kiwanis family?  (And I’d say it again!)
